Councillor Mary Martin

Mary Martin has been a resident of Surrey for nearly 25 years, and is honoured to have served the citizens of Surrey as an elected official since 2005, where she continues to witness the growth, innovation and progression of the vibrant city.

She believes that relevant and accessible community services are integral to building and sustaining a thriving city, and she continues to make furthering those services a priority. Mary undertstands the City of Surrey has a role to play in improving the health of its residents through education, physical fitness and social networking opportunities, while advocating the provincial health authorities for services that are in line with the needs of Surrey’s residents.

Mary serves as the city’s Diversity and Inclusivity Advisory Committee Chair, aligning with her position that every resident has the right to belong, and all are welcome. She also serves as the Chair of Community Health Programs Committee, which seeks to engage Surrey and its citizens by increasing awareness and support of the available food banks and mental health and addictions services, as well as advocating for expanded treatment and support programs.

She also places a high value on environmental sustainability and community wellness. Mary aims to ensure Surrey residents, both young and old, have access to adequate park space, community programs, and arts and culture; is working to facilitate the development of parks, facilities, services and events while embracing and fostering diversity, community identity and ensuring accessibility and exclusivity; encourages and supports both individual and community wellness initiatives; and champions developing, delivering and preserving cultural and educational resources.

Outside of work, Mary also serves on the boards of numerous community organizations, including the Semiahmoo House Society, Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation, Surrey Hospice Society, Fraser Health/Municipal Government Advisory Council, Healthier Community Partnership Council and Centre for Child Development.

Mary works hard to ensure the City of Surrey sets an example for other municipalities to emulate. She feels blessed to live in such a beautiful and dynamic city, and is grateful to serve its residents.
